Yeah, I'd sooner consider using the existing Windows laptop to finish off that dissertation. Cuz, that's an unsupported configuration.

Yeah, the OP might want to check to see if WordPerfect actually runs stably and properly on Windows ARM, before going the route of Parallels on Apple Silicon. I had never even considered using my current Macbook with an external monitor. While 8GB may meet your current needs, you my find you need more RAM as you start using more applications down the road. Since you can't upgrade the Mini's RAM after purchase, I'd get as much as you can afford (within reason) - just to help future proof your purchase. I'd look at a RAM upgrade to 16GB or even 32GB - if you think you need it.

If the HDD size is a non-issue (as you have an external drive). This setup will give you access to a bigger screen and a full size keyboard.Īnd while you may need a few adapters, it'll be a LOT cheaper then getting a Mac mini now.Īs for RAM on the mini, I'd consider what you plan to do with the machine. You can run the MacBook while closed, and it basically acts like a desktop. connect an external monitor and a USB (or Bluetooth) Keyboard to the MacBook and that'll allow you to make use of the machine you already have. One option, and this could work for either the Windows laptop or the Macbook is to use them in a desktop setup. Since you seem to have a lot of tech already, I'd consider making better use of what you already have - instead of buying another machine. What would you do – buy a Mac Mini and run Parallels, or buy another Windows machine for the time being? And no, writing something that long on a laptop is not an option – I want a proper keyboard and screen.Īnd if I buy the Mac Mini, should I buy one with 8GB of RAM or spring for the 16GB version? I do not care about the size of the HD as I have a 5TB external HD, so a 256GB internal drive will be OK. And that is where my dilemma comes in – I can use WordPerfect on a Mac if I run Parallels so am trying to decide if I should do that, or just buy another Windows desktop to use for the next 18-24 months while I write the dissertation. that can be used with it as I assume they will be compatible), but I need to use Corel WordPerfect for writing my doctoral dissertation as I do not trust Microsoft Word. If I am moving towards Mac it makes sense to buy a Mac Mini (I have a monitor, keyboard, etc. I have not yet learned how to use the Macbook, but will as soon as I get some free time in about six weeks. I currently have an iPhone, iPad, and a Macbook (M1, bought right before the M2 came out). I currently have a Windows laptop, but have recently been buying Apple products as I plan to move over to that ecosystem. My desktop computer (Windows) is dying and I am considering replacing it, but cannot decide which route to go so need some advice.
